In 2007, Embraer announced the study of a new military transport aircraft, during the sixth edition of LAAD (Latin America Aerospace & Defence), the largest and most important tradeshow dedicated to the armed forces and defense industries of Latin America. The aircraft, until then called EMBRAER C-390, would be the heaviest aircraft ever produced by the Company, with the capacity to carry up to 19 tons (41,888 pounds) of cargo. Two years later, in a ceremony held during LAAD in Rio de Janeiro, Embraer closed a deal with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) for the military transport aircraft and refueling program, which went on to be called KC-390.
The new jet will meet the needs of FAB, in total compliance with Brazil’s new National Defense Strategy.
